Hello Hello Hello!
I know we did a plant craft recently but I am doing another mostly because my mother sent me succulents and I needed more planters. But I thought, let’s make these planters fun! My boyfriend has been playing a lot of Pokemon Sword in the house, so maybe that’s where this all started, but I saw these little Bulbasaur planters on Instagram and I was like, I have to make those.
After playing around with a few ideas, I decided to change it up and think outside the box (also they were a hard to make shape) and instead make a planter that looks like another adorable pokemon, Oddish.
He was a much easier shape. If you didn’t grow up in the 90s and thus don’t have an engrained pokemon nostalgia, you can make this shaped planter into any type of face. I am going to make mine look like the photo above, but if you use a different set of colors or details you can use this same tutorial to make any kind of face planter you prefer.
I have seen a lot like this recently.
Okay so on to the craft! I started with a small plastic witch cauldron that I found at the dollar store, but any hollow circle should work. Plastic was good for me because I could poke holes for drainage at the bottom, but if you are using something like glass, make sure you can layer your planters for better drainage.
I started by carefully cutting off the lip of the cauldron, so it would look less like a cauldron and more like a bulb. I then painted a couple of layers of white acrylic paint.
This will let your final color really pop especially if you are painting on a black surface like I am. Plus is made some of the cauldron detailing less noticeable. After a couple of layers of white paint, I was ready to add two coats of blue.
Between my first and second coat, I decided to add some feet. If you are doing a different type of face, you can also add ears or other details to your planter.
I used hot glue to shape the feet. I made two ovals of hot glue on a silicone surface, but you can make them on wax paper or tin foil. When your shapes dry, simply peel them off.
I then used the hot glue to stick the feet on my planter.
I then added another coat of paint and painted the feet. When the coat of blue was dry, I added on my face with a bit of red and black paint.
When the face was dry it was time to add my plant. I first poked some drainage holes in the bottom with a pin and then added rocks, soil, and then finally my plant.
Honestly, this week has been pretty crazy for me and even getting this week’s newsletter out was a time crunch. But I still want to end with resources and a social justice note. I wanted to spotlight one resource in particular, Say Their Names. It’s a great resource for helping those in the black community that have been affected by police brutality. It’s 2021, but we still have to show up for BLM as hard as we did last summer. The police have not been defunded and there is still work to do. Say Their Names is a great way of keeping on top of petitions to sign, news, and how to help families.
As always stay safe and stay crafting.
